Florida 7's All Stars - May 31st for the north half of the state.

This is a new one for anyone interested. Florida is putting together a 7's U-20 All-Star Team.

This is to introduce the inaugural season of the Florida U-20 select side 7's program. The goal is to make Florida a national leader in the development of 7's. I am not sure if you are aware that along with the IRB series, 7's will be included in the 2011 Pan American games and will almost certainly be introduced as an Olympic sport at the 2012 games in London. To begin development we will be holding camps May 10th in Sarasota for the west coast May 17th in Boca Raton for the east coast and I have also kept May 17th open for a North Florida camp if we can get enough participants. We will then enter 2 teams in the Todd Miller 7's and finally we will end the season with a mini camp at the Cape Fear tournament (Jul 2-5) where we will have the assistance of US national 7's coach Al Caravelli and enter the team into the tournament I would very much appreciate if you could pass this on to as many possible candidates as you could and then have their information forwarded to me so that I can continue to build the player database The camps are Open to all and NOT invitational I would however like to know who will be attending, so if you know anyone interested they are more than welcome to participate. Also this is not strictly U20, players 21, 22 are welcome and encouragedto participateHere is the current camp information

Please remember our rules for travel.
1. You must let me or Andy know if you will be going without the group. If you plan on taking someone with you their parent must call and e-mail me or Andy. 407-466-4317.

2. No player drives another player. So with that Said I can take 2 or 3 players. I need more volunteers to help drive the remaining players.

3. Players can drive by themselves only. No player drives another player.

4. There will be no exceptions to these rules. You will not be given a warning and will be asked to leave the team if they are broken. I have will have no tolerance for excuses.

Using the excuse of not receiving this e-mail will not work as well.
Please distribute if you feel someone will have any problems with this.

We will be holding practice at Red Bug Lake Park this Thursday 7:00PM till 9:00PM and Saturday 7AM till 9:30AM. I need everyone that intends on playing next Saturday to make at least one of these practices. Get your warm gear on because it is cold.

Remember to talk to interested teachers and students for starting a club team in your school. Without this we will never grow into bigger club.

If you put in the work now for the next few days of practice it will pay off huge in the 1st game. Please free up your schedules. Also bring a new player out so that membership will grow.

Wednesday - 7:00 till - 9:00
We will cover ball skills and handling, lines of running, tackling and defensive basic alignments

Thursday same time if we have enough guys that are willing to come out.

Saturday - 7:00 AM to 9:30AM
We will cover ball skills and handling, lines of running, approaching the tackle, off loading the ball during the tackle, setting the ball, offensive rucking, keeping the ball going forward, and strategies of open offensive play.

Next week practice schedule will be as follows:

Monday 1-7-07
We will cover ball skills and handling, back line attack and formations, Offensive Line outs and Scrums, offensive rucking and 4 phase play.

Wednesday 1-9-07
We will cover ball skills and handling, defensive alignments and position play from set pieces, offensive lineout and scrums with back line attack, kicking strategies and game prep.

Thursday 1-10-07
If guys are willing we will have practice.

Rugby Clinic: Week 2

I apologize for being late with updating the website. We're now in week 2 of our Rugby Clinic.

Last week was a rare opportunity; starting with Rugby 101 on Saturday, we hosted the Australian, New South Wales U-19 team throughout the week. The Australian coaches were nice enough to come and work with us on two practices, and we scrimmaged them on Thursday with some help from the Orlando Men's team. The week ended yesterday with the New South Wales vs. USAR South all-star match (some excellent rugby once the tempers cooled in the second half.)

This week we continue our clinic with slightly more advanced skills and combining the skills we've been working on into game strategy. We have a local ref coming out tomorrow to go over laws, and we have a guest coach, Carlos, coming out Wednesday to help with training.

If you missed last week, don't worry, we'll work to bring you up to speed.

Fall 15's Practice

I hope everyone's enjoyed a little time off. Jeremy and I won't be running a full fall season this year. Instead we're going to try recruiting heavily and doing an intensive 2 week program instead. October 8th through October 20th. We plan to practice every week night; we’ll have 2 games, one on each Saturday; and we want to bring in as many guest coaches from the men's team as we can, to go over specific aspects of the game. We’re also trying to see if we can get an Academy session as well. Jeremy and I are very excited about what we're putting together.

Congratulations to those of you who are moving on college and men's sides. Raoul has started 15's practice for the men's. High school and college players are welcome to attend the men's practices and I'd highly suggest it. Tonight Raoul plans to go over rucking and poaching the ball, it should be a good practice. There’s a new kid, Mark, who’s visiting from England for a month or so, and I was contacted by another English kid who just moved here and wants to come play with us.

For those of you planning to play for the men's team, there's an AGM (Annual General Meeting) coming up on the 18th. Big changes to the men's club are in the works and they need input from EVERY player. If you're not already signed up for the men's email list, or check their web board regularly; I suggest doing so, this is the only email I'm going to send out concerning men's club business.

Congratulations to Alex Myers & Cory Montville. One of the he US National Team’s coaches, came down to scout out the high school players here in Florida. During the session he choose Alex and Cory for further evaluation to possibly play for the national U-21 and U-19 teams respectively.

PARENT’S NEEDED

Parent’s needed to help with the social preparation for home games. The food is planned and bought before hand we just need help setting up. Please have your parents sign up for the Google group if they haven’t already.

For new players; the post game social is a long standing rugby tradition, the two teams come off the pitch and all animosity is left behind. The players come together to celebrate the game of rugby, and show their respect for their fellow players. These players who are your opponents today will be your teammates tomorrow. The rugby world is fairly small, and as you move on to College or Men’s level rugby you’ll be meeting these players again and again.

RUGBY AT PIPER’S

I’d like to set up a couple of afternoons/nights at Piper’s to watch rugby like we did once in the fall. The times and dates depend on Setanta (the international sports network that Piper’s subscribes to). They only post their schedule a week or two in advance. To do this, players need to be on their best behavior at the bar, the liability to myself and the bar is huge. You also need to let your parent’s know beforehand what you’re doing and where. I don’t want any calls from parents yelling at me for taking their kids to a bar.

I don’t know why the lights were out last night, probably Halloween. Thursday, we will be having practice the regular time, if the lights are out again, try going over to the other side, between the soccer field and the tennis courts.

Light the Night Volunteers

In the past the Ironhorse team, and myself personally, have been involved with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s ‘Light the Night’ event. The event to celebrates and commemorates the lives touched by cancer. Funds raised will support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. This year it will be held September 16th, at Lake Eola. They’re asking for help with the following;

Setup will run during the hours of 12:00 - 4:00 with tables, chair, signs, etc.
Event will run from 4:45 - 9:00 with helping out in registration, balloon tent, food, drinks, etc.

I usually stay to help them break down the event as well. Setup and breakdown are the two times they need the most help. Rugby is a community game; we build a community within our team, we build a community of fellow rugby players of all ages and abilities, and we help out with the larger community that we live in. From past experience, if everyone pitches in, setup and take down will probably only take about 2 hours each, instead of the 4 that they have scheduled.

This Weekend & Naples

I apologize for getting this out so late, work’s been busy this week.

This weekend
Moe, the U-19 All-Star coach, has asked that anyone interested in playing this weekend head down to the Treasure Chest Tournament. He has two reasons for this, first to make sure he has plenty of depth in the All-Star team, and second he wants to start an All-Star Developmental team. The Developmental team Moe’s trying to put together would be younger, less experienced players, who would practice with the All-Star team and feed the All-Star team next year as players become ineligible. This is a great opportunity, both to excel your rugby knowledge and skills, and to meet and play with other players from throughout the state. As a further incentive, Moe will be setting up a 7’s team(s) for anyone who doesn’t play in the All-Star game against Harton. This way everyone who goes to the tournament this weekend should get some playing time, either on the All-Star team or on a 7’s team. It will also give you some face time with Moe and the other All-Star coaches, putting you in a good position to play on the All-Star team in the future.

Moe has asked that all players be CIPP registered. I will bring a printout of our registered team roster, players need to bring a photo ID if possible.

I will be meeting again at the McDonalds at the corner of 436 and University. I’ll be leaving at 6:00am and will only have room for 2 players, first come-first serve. Anyone driving separate, the 7’s tournament starts at 9:30am, I would plan on being there at 8:30-9:00am.

Driving Directions: (NOTE – this is NOT the same field as the tryouts)

Easiest way to the pitch: from I-95, Exit 101, Stuart. Head East on State Road 76/Kanner Highway for about ¼ mile. Take a right at the first light, SW Lost River Road. Follow the road back to the park.

From the Turnpike: exit 133, Stuart, Palm City. Go through the
toll booth and take a right on SR714. Go to the first Light, (High Meadows
Ave), and take a right. Follow this down to I-95 and go south one exit.
Follow the directions above.

We had a decent turnout Tuesday; I’m expecting a similar turnout tonight. I know the Naples team will be there, from talking to the coach, I think Harton School will be there as well, I don’t know if any other high school teams will be going. To be on the safe side, I’m going to invite the Tampa guys to join us if they aren’t already going. I need to know a definite count on who’s going by tomorrow night. This will be an overnight trip, make sure your parent’s are aware of this and make appropriate arrangements with your work schedules to take most of Sunday off as well.

I’ll have costs, directions and times for you next week.

We’ll be playing Harton School from England this weekend in combination with several other teams including Brevard, LPA, and some players from a new Tampa team that is starting this fall. The game will be in Cocoa, at Brevard’s field. We’re scheduled to kick off at 1:00 pm. We’ll be holding a quick team practice with the combined players at 12:00 noon; that means getting to the field about 11:30 to put on your gear etc. Please bring $10.00 to help cover the cost of the cookout that we’ll be providing for both teams and spectators, after the game. This will be a full 80 minute, 15’s game.

I’ll be at the McDonalds on the corner of University and 436 from 10:30-11:45 if anyone wants to meet up, or needs a ride.

Directions:
Beach Line to I-95. Take I-95 south to SR 520 (exit 201). Take SR 520 east to Varr (ABC Store on the right/light). Turn right onto Varr and go 2 blocks. Pitch will be on your right. Parking can be across the street by the basket ball courts if street parking is full.

For Saturday each player needs to have both a red and grey T Shirt available. No logos etc. Be warmed up and ready to run by 10:00 AM. This does not mean show up at 10:00 AM.
Water and gatorade will be available, but bring your own in case we're short. Also, bring a snack with you, so you can eat during our skull session at the field.
The first 250 wings are on me at Beef O'Bradys after our scrimmage.
Its hot this time of the year. This session will not be easy. There is no room for individuals not conditioned.

We Won!

For anyone who doesn’t know yet, this past weekend we continued our tradition as a strong 7’s team. Our first game against LPA ended in a 14-14 tie, and we were awarded the win. (Tournament rules being that the first team to score was given the win in the event of a tie.) Because Naples had already beaten LPA earlier, this set us up to play Naples as a qualifier, then again as a final. We decided to play the qualifier game as the final, then a motley game to give everyone playing time. I don’t have the score of the game vs. Naples, but I know we won after a hard fought game, giving us the win for the high school division of the tournament.

I was disappointed that most of our players left before the motley game; including players that had voted to play again. In rugby the best way to learn the game is by playing. Motley games, scrimmages, & ‘B’ side games are very important and need to be played as learning experiences for yourselves and your teammates. Many men’s sides will play full 80 minute games, then play another full 80 minute ‘B’ side game just to allow some of their newer players playing time, or for the new members of the opposite team.

Overall I was proud and impressed with the players who came out to the tournament. Thank you for showing up and playing your best.

U-19 All Star Tryout

This is a reminder that our Florida U-19 All Stars will be having a training session on Saturday July 8 in order to prepare for our game against Harton School

England

on July 22 at the Pirates Treasure Chest 7's Tournament.

By now all interested players should have been training on their own and practicing as much as possible at your respective Clubs.

Our session will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, on Saturday, July 8 at Jessica Clinton Park in Port Saint Lucie. This means being warmed up and ready by 10:00 AM. We will break in between for a skill session before ending in a scrimmage. A top 25 will be chosen from this session.

Please plan on attending Beef O'Bradys afterwards for some food and to watch some Rugby on the big screen.

Todd Miller Tournament

This Saturday June 24th, we will be playing in the Todd Miller Tournament which is put on by the UCF men’s and women’s teams. This year the tournament is at Austin Tindall Park in Kissimmee. I’ll be collecting $10.00 per player at the field to cover the entrance fee. I believe that LPA boys will be there, though I haven’t heard from their coach yet. I have been told by the tournament director that there will be 4 high school girls teams there. We’ve been promised at least one game; if LPA is there we’ll probably play against them several times. Whatever teams show up, it should be a good day of fun and 7’s rugby. The tournament starts at 11:00am, please be there by 10:30. I will need to be there at 9:30 to register the team. If players want to meet to carpool, pleas work it out amongst yourselves.
